‘The Hangover’ Was a Game-Changer For Mike Tyson |
‘The Hangover’ might have been a lark-filled booze-soaked buddy movie for some, but for oft-troubled former-heavyweight champ Mike Tyson, it was a life changer. “I was telling my wife that I feel like I won the championship of the world again,” Tyson told reporters backstage at the Golden Globes after “The Hangover” took the award for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
“I got all these white people [saying], ‘Hey stop.’ Hey, where did these guys come from?” the one-time boxing champ added. Tyson’s surprise appearance both on stage during award presentations and backstage after his movie’s victory was one of the show’s great moments. Backstage, he was bubbly and playful with his ‘Hangover’ co-stars and pointed out that he had to be convinced to do the movie which displayed Tyson’s game comedic chops (and terrible singing voice). “I didn’t really have too much faith in movies,” he explained saying he changed his mind when finding out that director, Todd Phillips, had directed ‘Old School’ which Tyson loved. Iron Mike then went into a spiraling tale involving Phillips, and girls, prompting the suddenly horrified director to step in and break up the talk: “These are private conversations,” Phillips said sheepishly. Back on message, Tyson grew profound about his new success. “This gave me a new lease on life,” he said. --PopEater
