Why Do People Still Question Tiger?

DUBLIN, Ohio — No need to worry about Tiger Woods heading into the U.S. Open.

Woods broke away from a four-way tie for the lead Sunday at the Memorial with birdies on his final two holes, the last one a 7-iron that stopped a foot away from the cup for a 7-under 65 and a one-shot victory over Jim Furyk.

With a high-charged rally from a four-shot deficit, Woods revved up the crowd and silenced those who questioned his game heading into his title defense at Bethpage Black in two weeks.

He didn’t miss a fairway in the final round, the first time he has done that in more than five years. He missed only five fairways all week, his most accurate tournament off the tee since the 1998 Masters.

I love how the rest of the field starts spraying it everywhere as soon as Tigers name starts creeping up the leaderboard-TO

Tiger Woods Into Sportsmanship, Lebron Not so Much

Yo T, we gotta teach LeBron some manners...

DUBLIN, Ohio — Tiger Woods isn’t likely to storm off the 18th green on Sunday if he doesn’t win the Memorial Tournament. Woods was asked earlier this week whether athletes should shake hands after a competition. Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James was criticized when he did not shake hands with Orlando Magic players after losing in Game 6 of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals. Woods, who attended some of the games in his hometown of Orlando, is a huge sports fan. He tried to put the controversy in historical perspective.

“Well, if you look at it, not everyone shakes hands after every game,” he said. “Football, a lot of guys just walk off the field. A lot of sports, they walk off the court or field. Hockey, they line up. It’s tradition. And it’s part of our sport, the tradition of taking the hat off and shaking hands.

“The history of our game is about sportsmanship. We call penalties on ourselves. I don’t see anybody in the NFL saying, ‘I’m sorry. I held the guy. Give me 10 yards.’ That doesn’t happen. “But I think that what separates our sport from other sports is just the traditions of the sportsmanship, when you doff your cap and shake someone’s hand and look them in the eyes and say, ‘Well done.’” Woods said he was rooting for the favorite team of his youth (the Los Angeles Lakers) over the Magic in the NBA Finals. “I live in Orlando and root for the Magic, but I’m from L.A.,” he said. “I grew up watching Magic [Johnson], Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar] and [James] Worthy and Byron [Scott] and all those teams. Before that, [Bob] McAdoo and [Norm] Nixon, you name it. It’s hard, but I’m from L.A.”

LeBron should take a cue from Tiger. Tiger is a class act all around, win or lose. -TO

Tiger Woods has Bionic Knee

Terez, I told you my drive will be back...

Terez, I told you my drive will be back...

Two things can be ruled out as the cause for Woods’s outage: his surgically repaired knee and his equipment. On the range Tuesday in the run-up to the Players Championship, Woods was experimenting with different shaft lengths but decided to stick with the same driver setup he had used all year. And though he is coming back from reconstructive knee surgery, he said the knee was stronger than ever. “It’s just I’ve been away from the game for a long time,” said Woods, whose driving distance average is just over 293 yards, down a yard from a year ago, when he was ranked 44th on the PGA Tour in distance. “And it’s going to take a little bit of time before my body gets back to where I can hit the ball the same distances. I don’t hit the ball the same distance with my irons or my driver. “But it’s coming. Each and every week, I’m getting a little better. And the body is starting to get a little more comfortable with everything. When you’re away for that long, and I have a whole new leg, it’s going to take a little time.” – NY Times

Tiger’s distance is down a yard. Maybe he should try the happy gilmore swing like paddy. -TO

There’s no law mandating that TV types need always speak of Tiger Woods as a secular deity. After CBS’ David Feherty jokingly asked Woods is he felt like a “loser” in finishing fourth in Sunday’s Quail Hollow Championship, Woods gamely pointed out he was — “and not even the first loser.” CBS’ Jim Nantz drove home the historic TV moment: “Three times in a sentence, (Feherty) called Tiger a loser.” Don’t expect to see anything like that on TV again in your lifetime. – USA Today

No wonder Tiger Woods and Colts QB Peyton Manning have struck up a friendship that they stoke through scores of voicemail and text messages, and the occasional round of golf. They are lit by the same competitive flame. Manning and Colts receiver Anthony Gonzalez, whom he employed as his caddie, were leaving for Indianapolis immediately after the round so they would not miss their afternoon weight-training session. – NY Times

Tiger to Make Up For Masters Choke

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tiger Woods will play in his first tournament since the Masters next week at the Quail Hollow Championship. Woods on Friday committed to the event formerly called the Wachovia Championship. He won the tournament in 2007, but couldn’t defend last year because he was recovering from the first of two knee surgeries. Woods has been off since mid-April, when his final-day charge came up short at Augusta National and he finished tied for sixth. Next week’s tournament will serve as a tuneup for Woods ahead of The Players Championship a week later. Woods’ commitment gives the Quail Hollow Championship, which begins Thursday, one of the best fields on the PGA Tour with 10 of the top 14 golfers in the world rankings. Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh, defending champion Anthony Kim, Jim Furyk and Masters champion Angel Cabrera are scheduled to play. “We are very happy to have Tiger coming back,” tournament director Kym Hougham said. “With the exception of Joey Sindelar, who has moved on to the Champions Tour, we have all of our past champions returning. The patrons and the community of Charlotte are in for a real treat this year.” Tournament officials are hoping Woods’ appearance will cause fans to gobble up the remaining tickets for the event, which has been affected by the slumping economy. Wells Fargo, which bought Wachovia late last year, took the Wachovia name off the tournament at Quail Hollow Club. Wells Fargo will limit its involvement to the terms of the sponsorship agreement it inherited, which runs through 2014. The Charlotte area also has been hit harder by the recession than most because of the high concentration of banking jobs. Tickets have never been available this late ahead of the tournament. Having the No. 1 golfer in the world in the field could change that in a hurry. Woods long has been a fan of the Quail Hollow Club layout and will play in the tournament for the fourth time in seven years. He missed the inaugural event and did not play in 2006 following the death of his father.-ESPN
