Serena Hates Andalucia

MARBELLA, Spain (AP) — Top-ranked Serena Williams was upset by 95th-ranked Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 on Wednesday in the first round of the Andalucia Tennis Experience.

Zakopalova converted seven break points in defeating the 2009 Australian Open champion.

Williams won less than half of her service points to lose her second straight match. She also lost to No. 8 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the Sony Ericsson final on Saturday.

Zakopalova will next face fellow Czech Renata Voracova.

Third-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia also won her opening-round match, 6-4, 6-2 over Silvia Soler Espinosa of Spain.

In the second round, fourth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues beat Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-2, 6-3 in an all-Spanish matchup, while seventh-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania defeated Andreja Klepac of Slovenia 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Also, Roberta Vinci of Italy beat Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3.

On Thursday, fourth-ranked Jelena Jankovic will play lucky loser Selima Sfar of Tunisia for a place in the semifinals.

The Andalucia Tennis Experience sounds like a ride at Disney World. Its a lot harder for Serena to win when she doesn’t stage her matches. Unfortunately, she wasn’t playing her sister, so she actually had to try..I guess she didn’t try hard enough. -TO

Venus and Serena Let Serena Win

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — Serena Williams retained the No. 1 world ranking by being the best player in her family Thursday night.

Williams defeated older sister Venus 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open. It was their 20th sibling showdown, and each has won 10 times.

Serena needed to reach the final to retain the top ranking she has held since Feb. 2.

“I’m excited,” Serena said. “I was thinking I’d love to remain No. 1. I think I was more happy about that than winning the match.”

If Venus had won, Serena would have been supplanted in next week’s rankings by No. 2 Dinara Safina.

“Even though she’s my sister, I’m still here to win,” Venus said. “I can’t give anyone anything. So I’m disappointed that I lost tonight, whether or not she kept the ranking.”

The fix is in. These two “actresses” stage all their matches.  Their dadager always scripts their matches. Sometimes its as easy as a coin flip.  Next time Venus wins. Mark my words..On a side note, who would you rather? .-TO

Venus and Serena to Stage Another Match

MIAMI (Reuters) – World number one Serena Williams survived a scare to beat China’s Li Na 4-6 7-6 6-2 on Wednesday and reach the Sony Ericsson Open semi-finals — where she will meet her sister Venus.

Venus has a 10-9 record against her sister but earlier this month lost to her in an exhibition match at Madison Square Garden.

With the pair being similar in style and approach to the game, Venus said the outcome would come down to temperament.

”Our core beliefs and our core (play) is very similar. The difference in our game would be down to personality, I think,” she said. Serena said she expected to raise her game for her sister.

”I’m always going to be up for V, because she’s playing really well and is always playing me super tough.

”Her balls are harder and her serve is way bigger … It’s frustrating, but at the same time fun,” she said.

Everytime the sisters play each other, they determine who will win before the match is ever played. Rumor has it, they draw straws to see who will win. Their father always taught them to stage their matches in order to protect the true losers feelings.  I think its Venus’ turn to win.  -TO

Venus and Serena Continue Boycott

Williams' Sisters

The most famous boycott in modern tennis goes on. The Williams sisters have not returned here since a celebrated incident in 2001. Venus, citing injury, pulled out of a semifinal match against Serena four minutes before it was scheduled to begin. The crowd booed that night and booed Serena again in the final. Their father, Richard, alleged racist taunts from the crowd. Father and daughters vowed never to return. They have lived up to that promise, even as new WTA rules punish players who skip one of the tour’s so-called mandatory events. The Williams sisters are sustaining injury to their world rankings, losing money from the bonus pool and must perform a day of tennis-related activity within 125 miles of Indian Wells — or face a two-week suspension and a $75,000 fine. They remain undeterred. And Indian Wells, perhaps the most important tournament in the world that isn’t a Grand Slam, goes on without them. – NY Times

If this were a grand slam event there is no chance these girls wouldn’t show. They are stubborn dudes. I mean chicks. -TO
