“Becoming Manny” details – for the first time – Manny Ramirez’ early years growing up in the Dominican Republic and the Washington Heights housing project in the Bronx, N.Y. It covers his baseball career from Little League and high school to the minors and finally, the bigs. Among the revelations: Manny reads inspirational books such as “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne, a new-age self-help book. He does Mantra yoga and meditates. He also chants, to clear his head of negative thoughts. When Manny was in high school, one of his teachers saw him working intently at a desk, hunched over a paper he was writing on. He was practicing signing his autograph. Manny is very shy and socially awkward, which is why he never went to the White House with the rest of the team when they won the World Series. But he did get a kick out of President Bush’s joke that his grandmother must have been sick again. Manny rarely carries cash and is always borrowing 15 bucks for lunch from his teammates – then driving off in a $30,000 car. Now we know why Manny is perfect for LA.
