Dwight Howard Wins Defensive Player of the Year |
Howard is expected to be presented with the award at a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. At 23 years and 128 days, he is the youngest player ever to be named defense player of the year, according to the report.
Howard, who said in training camp that he wanted to lead the NBA in blocked shots, reached that goal with 2.92 blocks and 13.8 rebounds per game.
The Magic trail their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Philadelphia 76ers, 1-0. Game 2 is Wednesday in Orlando.
Howard, who posted career playoff highs of 31 points and 16 rebounds in the Game 1 loss, was inadvertently scratched in the eyes by Sixers center Samuel Dalembert late in the third quarter. Howard said Monday he was going to get his eyes examined because he was “seeing just a whole bunch of crazy stuff” when he closed them and felt a “pulsating” sensation when they were open.
But he’s not expected to miss any game time and even joked, “I used to be a boxer back in my former life, so I was used to those punches.” Information from The Associated Press is included in this report.
Terez loves me some defense. Like I have been saying for months, Dwight would take home the trophy. Another Terez prediction come true. -TO
