Ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy wins $1.3M

Never bet against me T...

A Florida jury awarded former NBA referee Tom Donaghy $1.3 million in a lawsuit against the company that published his memoir. Tim Donaghy sued Shawna Vercher and her company, VTi Group, in Pinellas County civil court, saying he hadn’t been paid. The now-defunct company published Donaghy’s 2010 book about referees and the NBA — I guess you can’t always count on Karma.-TO

Terez, I'm practicing my vowels..

Tim Donaghy has become the latest public figure to write a book before reading one. The difference is that most of those other “authors” had ghost writers. Donaghy said he had help from no one – except his mother. In his new book, Personal Foul: A First-Person Account of the Scandal that Rocked the NBA, the disgraced NBA referee writes that because he was never a very good student, he was proud of himself for graduating from Villanova. “Not bad,” he wrote, “for someone who had never read a book.” Yesterday, Donaghy clarified that claim a little. “Cover-to-cover, I never had the patience to sit down and read a book,” he said. “But I guess I was being a little facetious.” Donaghy, who also said he majored in English in college, wrote the chapters in federal prison and mailed them to his mother, Joan, in Havertown. “She would send it back, and I would redo it,” he said. “Then I’d mail it back to her to edit and make suggestions.” — Philadelphia Inquirer

Crooked ex-referee Tim Donaghy, fresh out of jail, has arranged for the publication of his tell-all book just in time for the holidays. The perfect stocking stuffer for the NBA commissioner who has everything. “Personal Foul: A First-Person Account of the Scandal That Rocked the NBA” will be available in bookstores nationwide by Christmas. It will be prereleased Friday to select outlets. Donaghy, the Villanova grad who recently completed a federal prison sentence for gambling on basketball games through two Philadelphia-area associates, will discuss his memoir on “60 Minutes” in an interview with Bob Simon tentatively scheduled to air Sunday. VTi-Group, a Tampa Bay-based media company, decided to publish Donaghy’s 245-page book after Random House scrapped it. VTi-Group said that the memoir, along with the “60 Minutes” interview, “will finally answer many of the questions about his gambling, the NBA games that were affected and the involvement with the New York Mafia.” – Philadelphia Daily News

The estranged wife of former NBA referee Tim Donaghy said yesterday that her husband was being “treated unfairly” by Florida authorities who arrested him Tuesday for a possible parole violation. Kimberly Donaghy, who has not yet been granted the divorce she filed for in 2007, reiterated what the ex-referee’s lawyer had said about the incident that landed Donaghy back in jail in Tampa, Fla. “Tim had permission to be with a physical therapist for his knee injury,” she said in an e-mail to The Inquirer. “The halfway house that he was in has made a grave error in judgment, and due to their oversight, Tim is not only being held on false grounds in a county jail, but he is not being given the adequate medical care that he needs for his knee.” – Philadelphia Inquirer

Tim Donaghy Writing Tell All Book on How NBA Execs Influenced Refs

Terez, any ideas for my book?

Terez, any ideas for my book?

Tim Donaghy hasn’t finished writing it. The ex-ref’s memoir – part “tell-all” barnburner, part self-help book for gambling addicts – could hit store shelves as early as November. “He’s working on a publishing deal as we speak,” said Pat Zaranek, an inmate consultant who is serving as Donaghy’s spokesman. “It’s a compelling story that tragically illustrates the destructive power of addiction to gambling,” he said. “What Tim wants to do is share this story with the hope that it will help others.” But the book is sure to rile NBA executives, coaches and players by elaborating on the explosive charges that Donaghy made in court filings last year. It will delve into what Donaghy calls a “culture of manipulation and fraud” that permeates the league, Zaranek said. “It’s a tell-all about his 13 years in the NBA,” he said. “He describes how he picked winners 70 to 80 percent of the time and goes into detail about his knowledge of the special relationships between referees and players and coaches” – and how league executives allegedly influenced referees’ calls. NBA commissioner David Stern has strongly denied those claims. – Philadelphia Daily News
