Thirty members of the Pirates’ team party, more than half of them players, were given a one-hour, guided-tour visit of the White House yesterday, a day before President Obamawill welcome the Steelers. “I thought we’d take a better tour,” said infielder Ramon Vazquez, noting that it was brief and limited. “It was nice to be in there, though. Those paintings they got — the 1800s, man.” Craig Monroe, as did others, expressed displeasure that the new president couldn’t greet them. “That was kind of disappointing,” Monroe said. The fact President Obama was busy with his day job, he added with a grin, “that stinks for him.” – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Rothlisberger said he does not have skin cancer or a Facebook page, which reported he was battling the disease, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“There’s no truth to it. I don’t have any of that stuff,” the Steelers quarterback proclaimed Wednesday.

“That stuff” are accounts on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and any other social networking Web sites. Roethlisberger said he does not use them, including the one under his name that proclaimed he had skin cancer, the Post-Gazette reported.

“I had a bunch of people ask me about it; obviously it’s not true,” Roethlisberger said after spring practice. “We had to go on our Web site to let them know I don’t have an account. There’s nothing going on.”

Accounts proclaiming to belong to Roethlisberger were still listed Wednesday on Facebook.com, MySpace.com and Twitter.com.

Roethlisberger said someone in the office of his agent, Ryan Tollner, has been working on removing such posts as this one that proclaimed he was sick:

I am sorry to all my friends cause I have not been on here in a while. As you may soon find out, I have been diagnosed with skin cancer. It is not too serious, but will need further (sic) attention. This has taken up most of my time. I will try to get on here more. I would appreciate your prayers!

Tollner posted this response on the Web site Bigbennews.com:

“Ben positively does not have Facebook or MySpace pages, nor a Twitter account! Any such postings are imposters and should be disregarded. We are actively working to end this problem with those companies.”

Maybe marrying a 43 year old wasn't such a great idea

PLANT CITY, Fla. — A 2-month-old is back in the arms of her parents, and the wife of a top Pittsburgh Pirates minor league prospect is suspected of taking the infant from a health clinic outside Tampa, authorities said Tuesday.

Amalia Tabata Pereira, 43, was being questioned by Florida detectives in Manatee County, where the baby girl was found unharmed Tuesday afternoon, a day after she was taken from the clinic. Plant City Chief of Police Bill McDaniel said authorities are looking to charge Pereira with false imprisonment.

She is the wife of Jose Tabata, 20, an outfielder and one of the top three prospects for the Pirates, who train in Bradenton, which is in the county where the infant was found. In a statement, Pirates president Frank Coonelly said they have received “no indication that Jose is believed to have had any involvement in this matter.”

Jose Tabata addressed the matter in a statement released by the team.

“I was shocked to be told today that my wife has been arrested for kidnapping. I am hurt, frustrated, and confused by her actions,” Tabata said. “I have and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials in anyway that I can. Until I have all of the facts, I cannot comment any further.”

What the hell is a 20 year old top prospect doing married to a 43 year old nut job? Dude, your 20 and on the way to being a major leaguer, play the field a little bit, no pun intended. -TO
