Yao Ming is featured in a new billboard over Madison Square Garden…The guy who posted the twitpic thinks its Yi Jianlian from the Wizards..He tweets..”Never thought a Wizard would have a billboard draped over Madison Square Garden. Got off train & who’d I see? Yi” It’s definitely not Yi..It’s Yao..I think..either way it’s to promote the World Basketball Championships in New York this weekend..The artist decides to give Yao the Popeye makeover look..Does Yao still even play basketball?? The Houston Rockets center attends a press conference for his ‘Yao Foundation Charity Tour’…Ming is joined by NBA players Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks, Hasheem Thabeet of the Memphis Grizzlies, DaJuan Summers of the Detroit Pistons and Amir Johnson of the Toronto Raptors, at Taipei today.. According to my source, the 30-year-old hobbled star, who sat out last season due to a foot injury, said that his rehab is going well and that he is looking forward to participating in scrimmages in the Rockets training camp..He will not play, however, in a charity game on Wednesday that will see NBA players meet a mixed team of Taiwanese and Chinese players at the Taipei Arena…probably a smart move..-TO

Basketball superstar Yao Ming and famed soprano Peng Liyuan yesterday became the new faces of China’s anti-smoking campaign, which health officials said is still a tough task in the world’s largest tobacco market. It is believed that they would appear in public service advertisements persuading people to give up smoking or not smoke in public places. Yao, the most successful Chinese NBA player, appeared in a 2006 advert asking the Chinese not to eat shark fin soup as part of a WildAid campaign to save the endangered fish from extinction. Peng also joined a public awareness campaign against HIV/AIDS stigma.– China.org

NBA giant Yao Ming is set to launch a bid to buy his old team, the Shanghai Sharks. Yao, who has been plagued by niggling foot injuries in recent seasons, is considering alternate career paths – including team ownership. Local media reports suggest the Houston Rockets centre is in discussions with the Shanghai Bureau of Sport to purchase a US$3 million controlling stake in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) side. – SportsPro Media
